World Action on Salt. Sugar & Health

Romania

2013

In 2013, the WHO reviewed salt reduction activities across the European region and produced the report 'Mapping salt reduction initiatives in the WHO European Region'. Below is a summary of salt reduction activities in Romania, as reported in this document:

There is not a formal salt reduction policy in Romania but there are regular public awareness campaigns and cooperation with the food industry, including an agreement between the Ministry of Health and the Food Industry Federation to reduce salt intake in the population between 2010 and 2015.

In 2010, the Ministry of Health estimated from 7-day dietary records that average salt intake in the population was 11.25g per day. However this did not take into account discretionary salt use.
