World Action on Salt. Sugar & Health

New Zealand

Salt Action Summary:

2006:

The Heart foundation of New Zealand received funding from the Government to implement a national food reformulation programme.

The Heart Foundation are working to encourage the industry to set up voluntary reformulation by setting sodium targets for packaged foods. Currently, sodium targets have been set in all key processed foods.

The approach in New Zealand is to exclude any kind of consumer awareness campaign, as it was feared that food companies would communicate reformulation to customers and it avoids the confusion over the fact that the Heart Foundation is endorsing less healthy foods, if they are lower in salt.
