Polar views in nephrology

19 September 2016

Three articles have been published in the journal Nephrology Dialysis and Transplantation looking at the pro’s, cons and rebuttals for salt intake and public health. They discuss the evidence for and against a global salt reduction policy and analyse the strength and quality of the evidence for its success to date on blood pressure, cardiovascular outcomes and cost savings to the health care system. The debate and controversy that has arisen regarding salt reduction stems from poor quality scientific studies with flawed methodology; there is vast evidence to show that salt reduction is both an effective and cost-saving public health measure in high-, middle-, and low-income countries and can save millions of deaths worldwide.
