World Action on Salt. Sugar & Health

Bolivia

2011

The Bolivian WASH group, Acción LatinoAmericana de Salud o Sal, (Latin American Action on Health or Salt) ‘ALASS’ has been set up, and we congratulate Patricia Campos Ustares and her team on this important step.  We have been following the progress of salt reduction in South America with great anticipation and are pleased to see so many countries now stepping up to take action.

2009

A review of salt reduction work around the world found that there is no national dietary guideline for salt consumption in Bolivia. Meals served in hospitals, nurseries and other community facilities have found that the salt intake in these settings is between 5 and 10g per day.

Soups, snack foods, condiments and meat products contribute the majority of sodium to daily sodium intake. Programs on healthy nutrition that include attention to salt intake currently exist for specific groups and are part of the activities undertaken by social clubs, for example, the Project Clubs for people with diabetes and senior citizens.
