WASH Support Nu-Tek Petition to Name Potassium Chloride 'Potassium Salt'

17 May 2018

WASH have supported the citizen petition - FDA-2016-P-1826, Citizen Petition from NuTek Food Science LLC - requesting that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) allow the labeling of “potassium chloride” as “potassium salt” (the “Potassium Salt Petition”).

Potassium chloride is a naturally occurring mineral and has been safely used as a food ingredient in the U.S. and worldwide for many years. Potassium chloride is most commonly used to replace all or a portion of the sodium chloride, or salt, within foods because of its ability to replicate many of sodium chloride’s taste, preservation, and functional properies. In addition, potassium chloride (potassium salt) is commonly used to enhance the amount of potassium – an essential and widely under-consumed nutrient – in food.
