High Level meeting on non-communicable diseases (NCDs) to be held in New York in September 2011. Alert your Head of State to the importance of salt reduction
29 November 2011
A very important meeting convened by the World Health Organisation and United Nations will be held in New York this coming September. The meeting, attended by Heads of State, will highlight the importance of non-communicable diseases as the major cause of death and disability in the world, both in developing and developed countries.
The major cause of non-communicable disease is cardiovascular disease, i.e. strokes, heart attacks and heart failure, and the major causes of this are high blood pressure, smoking and raised cholesterol. Salt is the major factor that puts up blood pressure. Salt reduction will play a prominent role in the meeting at the UN.
WASH is encouraging all members to alert their Heads of State to this important meeting, and the important role that salt reduction will have in the prvention of NCDs.
