World Salt Awareness Week (February 2nd - 8th 2009)
Welcome to World Salt Awareness Week.
Early next year World Action on Salt and Health (WASH) will be holding its 2nd annual World Salt Awareness Week (February 2nd - 8th 2009), focusing on salt eaten outside the home. We wish to raise awareness that foods in restaurants, takeaways, fast foods, street food, hawker markets, canteen food etc can contain a lot of hidden salt.
We aim to highlight to the catering industry and to chefs and others involved, the importance of adding less salt to food and the long-term health implications of eating a high salt diet. We also want to publicise to consumers that they must also take action in choosing lower salt foods and asking for much less salt to be added to their meals.
Participants
Australia, Bangladesh, Botswana, Bulgaria, Canada, Caribbean, Dubai, Egypt, Finland, Georgia, India, Kenya, Lithuania, Malta, Netherlands, Nigeria, Pakistan, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Sweden, Turkey, UK and the USA.
How to get involved?
For 2009 we would very much like members of the World Action Group to support our Week. The types of activities that you could organise may include:
Displays within community settings such as libraries and health-care centres;
Leaflet and poster distribution to health-care professionals, schools and doctor's surgeries;
Questionnaire for chefs on their salt use in cooking/restaurants on their salt policy;
Training sessions and presentations to people involved in salt reduction.
Further details will be sent nearer the time, we hope that this may help you in organising your own supporting events.
WASH will be collaborating with World Hypertension Day and World Kidney Day
